Viognier-Marsanne 2021

Viognier-Marsanne 2021

A Rhone-inspired Estate Blend of two amazingly complementary grapes.

In this singular blend, the intense stone fruit and floral aromas of Viognier link to the orange peel citrus accents and ethereal texture of Marsanne. Whole bunch pressed, fermented in neutral French oak barrels, and aged on lees for 6 months to promote texture and complexity.

The trick with Viognier-Marsanne is to capture exactly the right blend of the two grapes, allowing the Viognier’s chameleon-like versatility to promote and accentuate Marsanne’s comparatively subtle profile. This blend of 15.5% Marsanne has proven effective in promoting the finer varietal intricacies of the grape without diminishing the fruitful vivacity of the Viognier.

84.5% Viognier, 15.5% Marsanne

Tasting Notes
Light yellow-gold with good clarity, visible legs. Nose is really perfumey at first, also showing baked peach, toasted marshmallow, orange oil/dried orange peel. The wine is developed and fragrant with a hint of caramel. I like to see this one just lightly chilled instead of fridge temperature. The palate is really round, has a creamy mouthfeel. The acidity comes in mid-palate to finish and helps lift the aromatics. The alcohol is balanced with the texture as well. This wine would match great to tourtiere or souffle, or roast pork tenderloin with spiced apples. Opens up to more florals, tree blossoms, honey/mead notes as it aerates, this is lost by overchilling. A lot of the aromatics are balanced between the nose and the finish, it's interesting to compare the harmony of this with that of the two single-varietal counterparts: the Viognier is ready to drink now, the Marsanne shows potential to open up further ahead, and this V-M falls between the two. Keep 2-4 years and enjoy!
Production Notes
100% from Intersection's vineyards, picked September 24, 2021 (very early compared to other vintages for our Vio and Marsanne!) Heat dome year, balanced tonnage with both varieties. Whole cluster pressed and fractioned into free run/hard press juices, then fermented separately. One brand new Sirugue was used with some of the hard press Viognier, and all other barriques and puncheons in this blend are neutral, no stainless steel components. All Rhone 4600, typical batonnage schedule with 2x/week for the first few months, 6 total months of barrel aging.
Winemaker Notes
Viognier is growing in popularity in the south Okanagan, and suits the soils and conditions of our site very well. Marsanne is a close relative of Viognier from the Rhone valley in France, and while it's normally used as a blending grape, we find that it lends structure, earthiness and density to the palate of the bright and aromatic Viognier, and shines brilliantly on its own or in this blend. Using these two varieties, we craft this wine as our flagship white and aim to showcase its versatility and texture as well as some longevity for aging.
Food Pairing Notes
Pair with savoury apricot, walnut and ricotta tarts or stuffed pork chops.
